Mars in Cancer Revisited in Light of Hindsight

October 5, 2009 Mars enters Cancer
December 20, 2009 Mars station retrograde at 25:42 degrees Cancer
March 10, 2010 Mars station direct at 6:17 Cancer
Mars leaves Cancer on May 26, 2010 and is gandanta until June 4, 2010

Vedic astrologers often describe the red planet as a bad guy, one of four malefics (Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu). Usually Saturn is described as the 'big bad', but according to one of my favorite classics The Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Mars is the most malefic planet. It certainly can cause its fair share of misery. But Astrology Gary Gomes believes that Mars is misunderstood, and I agree with him. In his excellent article Mars(Mangala/Kuja/Angarika): The Spiritual Energy of the Mighty Malefic he proposes that Mars has a spiritual side:

One of the most frequently overlooked roles of Mars is its role in spiritual development, which I first encountered through the writings of the late M. Ramakrishna Bhatt--along with P. S. Sastri., one of the finest and best respected translators of Jyotish Sanskrit classics. Mars, according to Sri Bhatt, is the planet of those who avoid rebirth--certainly enough of a tantalizing hint to explore the spiritual dimensions of this planet.

Now that Mars has finally entered the fiery sign of Leo after transiting through its watery sign of debilitation for eight months, I thought I would give a parting assessment in the bright light of hindsight. What sort of spiritual lessons did it impart?

On October 5, 2009 Mars entered Cancer and remained there until May 26, 2010. Astrologically Mars is the planetary archetype for energy, desire, aggression, anger, war, and the ability to get what you want. When it is debilitated, energy doesn't flow smoothly, and it is much harder to get what you want; military victory is harder to attain; accidents and injuries increase, and unexpressed or repressed emotions suddenly flare.

Emotions are more volatile under the Moon's influence on the planet of desire. When Mars is placed in the sign of the Moon, psychological influences increase the negative effects of Mars like accidents caused by impulsive moods and illness rooted in psychological dis-ease. The Moon signifies feelings and emotions, the reflective mind, memory, and the public, and Mars represents will and courage. During the Moon's influence over Mars emotions stimulate desire and action, instead of wisdom and logic. Mars in Cancer can also give a sharp mind and the ability to heal through cutting or manipulating the body; but Mars in Cancer is also unreliable as it can also give start/stops at the wrong time, not to mention friction with the feminine principle.

When Mars entered Cancer, it did so while the Moon was in the sign of Aries creating a parvartana yoga, or mutual exchange of signs. This mutual exchange with the Moon canceled the debilitation of Mars for three days. To start this Mars cycle with this particular yoga indicates a promise of a higher purpose to this period.

One of the biggest media events at this time was NASA's LCROSS mission to bomb the Moon with a Centaur rocket in search for water. It was scheduled to occur while Mars was conjunct Ketu and the Moon was be in the last degrees of Taurus, its sign of exhaltation. Ketu has a fiery nature and when combined with Mars' impulsive and explosive energy it indicates a sudden release of violent energy. However, in this situation the strength of the Moon in its sign of exhaltation won. The explosion was supposed to be viewable on the Earth, but the bomb failed to produced the promised plume. The mission was a huge flop and left NASA scrambling to come up with some mission accomplished story line. By February President Obama cancelled the American project designed to take humans back to the Moon, and then on to Mars.

During the first week of December, NASA announced it found water on Mars. Ironically this followed a November 15th release of a BBC Dr. Who special called The Waters of Mars. This fictional story is set on Mars in the year 2059, where the Doctor encounters the first human colony, Bowie Base One [Perhaps a play not only on David Bowie but his son who directed Moon (2009)]. This group is commanded by Captain Adelaide Brooke who turns out to be a pivotal character in the history of humanity. The Doctor must decide whether to use his knowledge of her fate to change history -- which he does.

Mars in Cancer certainly brought up themes of water and life on the Moon and red planet, as well as suggests that colonization may be an ill-fated idea. It also continued the extra-terrestrial meme of an earlier race waiting in a latent form to be released when humans start poking around. Jay Weidner also discusses this idea in his recent radio interview with Kerry Kennedy of Project Camelot (see Starsyncs for the link). He believes this race seeded the earth, and secretly controls the planet. They possess a knowledge of a 60,000 cataclysmic cycle in which the Sun sends a catastrophic solar flare that wipes life out on earth -- as in the apocalyptic movie Knowing. These "Martians" are currently preparing to return to Mars for safety before the next big flare supposedly in 2012, and later return to earth to regenerate their human slaves when all is clear. Interesting theory in light of our efforts to find evidence of life and water on Mars.

A month after NASA announced the discovery of water on Mars, the red planets trajectory shifted as it slowed and reversed into a three month retrograde cycle that created a reversal of debilitation called neecha banga. In my experience, the retrograde motion of a debilitated planet does not fully cancel the debilitation, but rather slows things down and softens the negative effects and in this case gives more opportunity to learn about our will and what we are will to do to get what we want.

Mars went retrograde on December 20, 2009 while in opposition to the Moon in Capricorn. This dance with the Moon at significant changes in motion is very intriguing and again points to a potential for enlightening lessons.

Astronomically Mars appears closer to the earth during its retrograde period (perhaps making it easier for interplanetary travel). In January Mars was only 99 million km (60 million miles) away and appeared bigger through a telescope than any moment between 2008 and 2014. During this time Mars rose a few hours after sunset in the eastern sky. Keep in mind that malefics have more power express negative aspects at night. At the same time of Mars full opposition to the earth on Friday, January 29, 2010, Uranus returned to the sign of Pisces in a parvartana yoga with Neptune, which as I mentioned in my previous post is connected to the initial explosion on the Deepsea Horizon Oil rig.

After three months Mars stationed and went direct on March 10, 2010, again in opposition to the Moon in Capricorn in the nakshatra of Uttara Ashada, conjunct President Obama's natal chart ruler, Saturn, and dasha lord, Jupiter. As we have seen from his election chart, Uttara Ashada has delivered him 'unchallengable victory' on previous occasions. At this time the big media story was the push for universal Health Care and it was clear that President Obama was directing his will behind the scenes. After canceling trips abroad, he put all of his energy and attention into this bill, which finally passed without the public (Moon) option. Although the President didn't get everything he wanted, it was a significant win and beginning for universal health care.

Two weeks later President Obama shocked liberal supporters with an announcement that he wanted to increase off-shore drilling off the Atlantic coast. For a president on a roll following a big health care win, the drilling declaration was called both aggressive and pragmatic by the press. He rationalized: "Even with a push for cleaner energy sources and efficient cars – and with promises of protection for ecosystems and coastal tourism – the nation still needs more oil." This decision was based on the need to start to reshaping far-reaching economic and national security policies, affecting where the U.S. gets the fuel for its cars, heating energy needs (Mars) of the people (Moon).

As I discussed in my previous post, Mars also rules real estate, metals, and anything that is piercing or penetrating like oil drilling. The event chart showed the influence of this debiliated Mars in the rising sign of Scorpio. Moreover Mars aspected [8] the ruler of oil, Neptune which was in an exact parvartana yoga with the ruler of unpredictable and sudden change, Uranus, was placed in the fortuitous 9th house. And the repeated theme of flowers and lotus made me wonder what good could possibly come out of this environmental disaster?

And then I realized the irony that The BP logo resembled a flower. In 2000 BP changed its name from British Petroleum to Beyond Petroleum, and unveiled its all too familiar "green" brand image in an attempt to win over environmentally aware consumers. Like the double-cross of the Exxon logo, the so called green flower is really a disguised-in-plain view symbol of Helios, an ancient Greek Sun god, representing energy in its many forms. According to BP the company the logo and "Beyond Petroleum campaign" represents their focus on meeting the growing demand for fossil fuels, manufacturing and delivering more advanced products, and enabling the material transition to a lower carbon future.

It is clear that BP has not been forth right in dealing with this environmental disaster. Withholding crucial video, blocking media access to the site, and a failure to share complete information about efforts and failures to contain the largest oil spill in U.S. history have created the widespread impression that BP is misleading the public and the government. And the Obama administration has also been under fire for blindly accepting BP's cover story. Yesterday, as Mars passed the critical 3rd degree of its gantanta state, the Feds initiated a criminal investigation of BP. It remains to be seen what we have truly learned about our oil addiction, but it seems like the public is waking up and demanding change. I personally believe those in power fear this the most, and are terrified of losing their grip on their human slaves.

Personal Reflections on this Mars Cycle

I have never experienced or witnessed such a long period of continuous pain and suffering both in the collective and personally. My own natal chart contains Mars in Cancer, but its retrograde motion and mutual exchange with Moon in Aries has negated much of its negative potential. So this transit of Mars through Cancer was also a Mars return for me. Moreover, Mars aspects every planet in my natal chart, so I was keenly aware of its vibration in nearly all aspects of my life and witnessed its effects on my partner, family, patients, colleagues, and friends.

As Mars rules my 10th house of work from the 6th house of service and health, it is no surprise that my primary work is acupuncture. I suspected that my practice might suffer a little during this Mars cycle, or I might be a little tired. Initially my practice was busier than ever in part because so many patients were in crisis. I was fully booked through the winter holidays. However, once it went retrograde, things began to slow down. I welcomed this decline as my own health had suddenly been tested. In November I noticed a few flea bites (Mars transiting my natal Rahu which is the current dasha lord), and by the end of December I realized that my body was dealing with an exacerbation of Lyme's disease -- an infection of the blood, which is ruled by Mars.

Most of my symptoms were achy joints and muscles, and very bad headaches that I took NSAIDs to keep at bay. By February the NSAIDs had burned my stomach and esophagus and I ended up in the ER on a Tuesday (Mar's day) night (when Mars is at its most malefic) with severe stomach pain. My attending doctor was -- drum roll -- Dr. Mars -- I kid you not!! The synchronicity of the moment made realized that this was a special moment in time: an opportunity for real change. I had been addicted to NSAIDs for years, and I was in enough pain to finally stop them cold turkey and deal with the pain naturally. Mars also rules the 3rd house of my natal chart which is associated with writing, and thus part of my healing process included taking a break from writing and a fast from the internet. This break made me realize how much the media effects me on all levels; and I realized the illusion of it all. That in the present, I am safe, happy and well. I cannot express how much gratitude I have for this enlightening ordeal.

And can't help but wonder if many of the seemingly painful and intense Mars inflicted problems were all opportunities? It is still hard to tell if the new health care plan will really work, but it is a start in the right direction. It is harder to imagine anything good coming out of the rusty colored oil staining the Gulf of Mexico. Is it possible that we as a species may truly realize that we must stop polluting our world and our bodies, and actually take action to do so? Only time will tell, but I would keep my eye on Mars to see if it offering opportunities for enlightenment.

Namaste!

Astroweather - May 2010

Full Moon May 27, 2010 at 4:07 pm pdt

Tonight's full moon occurs at 5:55 degrees Scorpio in the nakshatra of Anuradha. In Western folklore, this Moon is called the Flower Moon, Corn Planting Moon, and the Milk Moon. There is a sweet resonance in Vedic astrology as the symbol for the nakshatra Anuradha is the lotus flower. A lotus starts as a small bud in the muck and mire deep at the bottom of a pond and slowly grows upward towards the light. Once it surfaces the lotus begins to blossom into an extraordinary flower. In the Vedic tradition, this growth from the dark to light reflects the soul's ability to blossom in the midst of the heaviness of life in the physical plane. Anuradha is known as the Star of Success and gives radhana shakti, the power of worship. The deity associated with Anuradha is the Sun God Mitra, the God of friendship and cooperation. Anuradha's success is attained through group work rather than individual achievement.

Although this nakshatra may give some good results, the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio and issues of anger, control, and jealousy may bubble to the surface as well. For example, President Obama was described by the Huffington Post as defensive and somewhat testy at today's press conference regarding the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. The Moon also rules the public, and in this case the public has showed a growing frustration and anger towards the oil companies and the response of the current administration likening it to Bush's Katrina fiasco.

Under the light of today's full moon, President Barack Obama announced that that his administration, not oil giant BP, was calling the shots in responding to the worst oil spill in the nation's history. "I take responsibility. It is my job to make sure that everything is done to shut this down," Obama declared at an Oil Spill Press Conference at the White House.

This full moon occurs withing four degrees of the rising sign in the event chart for the BP Oil Spill. Thus the light of this full moon has begun to illuminate some of the hidden causes and factors that may have triggered this environmental disaster, as well as the responsible parties and failed plans to plug the hole. The Vedic astrology event chart for the initial explosion at 10 pm gives a Scorpio rising, thus making Mars the chart ruler placed at 14:43 degrees Cancer. Mars's transit through Cancer, it sign of debilitation, has destabilized and deflated those things it rules such as the real estate market, war, will power, courage and metals, like drills. Red is the color associated with Mars, and this oil spill has not produced the typical black tarry type of crude, instead it has a rusty red sheen. Some have suggested that there might be iron compounds in this oil. Iron is the metal associated with the red planet. Mars is most debilitated at 28 degrees Cancer, and its negative effects compound in these later degrees as they are transitioning from water to fire, called Gandanta. During this past week Mars has been in a sensitive Gandanta state as it transitions from water to fire.

Gandanta is traditionally described as an inauspicious position causing misery to the area of influence of the planet. In Sanskrit Gand means knot, or node, and anta means end, in particular the last 3 degrees of a water sign, and first three degrees of a fire sign -- at the three distinct junctions of Pisces (Revati)- Aries (Aswini), Cancer (Ashlesha)- Leo (Magha), and Scorpio (Jyeshta)- Sagittarius (Mula). In this case, the planet Mars which rules metal and machinery, especially machinery that penetrates like oil drills, is weakened (literally) in the water sign of Cancer. When planets are placed in these positions, they take on a special power to unravel the knot of karma and move on to the next level. If a planets falls in the last three degrees of water sign, it is completing an old cycle; if it falls in the first three degree of a fire sign is beginning a new cycle. During this full moon, Mars has just slipped into the friendly sign of Leo which may indicate a new cycle of healing for this underwater mess.

BP's next attempt to stop the oil leak will involve a maneuver called "top kill" in which 50,000 barrels of drilling mud will be pumped into the leak to slow it down. If successful they will then seal it with cement. This morning BP announced that it had suspended its "top kill" attempt at plugging the well on Wednesday while Mars was still in Cancer because too much of the drilling fluids were escaping. It resumed pumping fluids into the well tonight as Mars travels further into Leo. Officials said it could be late Friday or the weekend before the company knows if the "top kill" has cut off the oil that has been flowing for five weeks. Mars will be Gandanta until next Wednesday or Thursday which indicates that the current "top kill" method to plug the hole may indeed take some time.

Other astrological factors in the Event Chart for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

With so many unanswered questions surrounding what is really going on in the Gulf of Mexico, I thought it would be intriguing to look at the Horary chart, called Prashna in Vedic Astrology, to see if it might shed some additional light or meaning on this environmental catastrophe. Both Eastern and Western astrologers use a Horary chart that is created for the date, time and place of a particular event. Usually the rising sign and its ruler are assessed to gain insight into influences surrounding the event and an outlook for possible developments stemming from that event.

As I mentioned above, the initial explosion occurred around 10 pm edt on April 20, 2010 which had the constellation of Scorpio rising in the East in the nakshatra of Anuradha. A debiliated Mars in Cancer was placed in the fortunate 9th house, in one of the most auspicous nakshatras Pushya, meaning the "nourisher" and sometimes translated as "flower". It is intriguing that both the rising sign and its chart ruler are symbolized by flowers. What good could possibly come out of this environmental disaster? Perhaps we will finally look revolutionary methods of cleaning oil spill with "flowers" like "fungal flowers" such as the mushrooms as suggested by Paul Stamet in this article (click here) and video below.

Another clue may be revealed when we look at the planet that rules oil, Neptune. Traditionally Vedic astrologers do not consider the outer planets, but in this case there are intriguing energies that are connected to this mysterious outer planet and the oil spill. In a previous post I discussed a rare parivartana yoga or mutual exchange occurring between the two gas giants Neptune and Uranus. In Vedic astrology a parivartana yoga is a special relationship and union of energies. It indicates that each planet takes on strengths and characteristics of the other. During the initial mutual exchange of Neptune and Uranus in 2009, we certainly witnessed many strange (Neptune) and sudden (Uranus) events that revealed truths like a fog lifting in sunlight. New stories were multi-dimensional, with layers of truth, illusion (Neptune), and dissent (Uranus) woven through them, like the worldwide hype over the H1N1 virus and vaccine; the debate over public health care; the discovery of exo-planets orbiting distant stars; the politics of the disclosure movement; and the recurring alien memes infiltrating the media, film and even the Vatican. On the day of the BP oil rig explosion this mutual exchange was exact at 4 degrees and Jupiter was traveling in the same Aquarian constellation as Neptune which expanded its influence even further.

The last time a mutual exchange occurred between these two gas giants was in 1846, when Neptune was first discovered synchronistically at the same time as oil. I have been wondering if this current parivartana yoga is a signal that the world is finally in the "last hours of ancient sunlight" as our oil reserves having been voraciously consumed by the industrial revolution. Could the catastrophic BP Oil Spill lead to a flowering of new Aquarian consciousness of developing clean sources of energy for the future? It is clear we must unite and come up with some revolutionary changes if we want to continue inhabiting planet earth.

Namaste!

And a little more for my conspiracy minded friends:

On April 20, 2010 an explosion caused a fire on the Deepsea Horizon Oil Rig that killed 11 people and injured 17 others.

This sentence alone provides fodder for anyone familiar with Illuminati and Masonic symbolism. April 20th is a date associated with many past terrorist acts (Hitler's birthday, Oklahoma bombing, Wako Texas Massacre, Columbine shootings etc); and 11, 13, 17, and 33 are masonic numbers that show up over and over again in the media and signal that a ritual has taken place.

Two days later on April 22nd the rig sank to the bottom of the sea floor at 1,300 feet leaving a gusher from the deepest drilled oil well in history: 35,050 (3+5+0+5+0=13).

As I mentioned above, the rising sign of the Prashna chart is Scorpio in the 17th nakshtra Anuradha.

According to Vedic astrologer Prash Trivedi the number 17 is usually seen as a bringer of celestial waters down to the earth plane. Anuradha is the 17th nakshatra which presides over numerology and is known as the decoder of the secrets of the universe. 17's magic goes back to ancient mystery cults of Egypt and some believe it is used to trigger the subconscious mind and ready it for download. As the rising sign occurs in the 17th nakshatra, this might indicate the event is indeed a release of cosmic information to the earth. In tarot, the 17th major arcana card is the Star card which depicts the waterbear Aquarius pouring waters to humanity.

Moreover, Anurada contains three stars in the body of Scorpio near the star Alpha Centauri. As I discussed in a previous post, Alpha Centauri is the closest star to our solar system, and as such is the focus of a lot of recent astronomical research for an earth-like planet, and the fictional location of Pandora in James Cameron's Avatar. It has shown up in other event charts of unusual phenomenon like the Norway Spiral.

The Deepsea Horizon Oil Rig was designed by R & B Falcon (soulful Horus?).

The name of the project of this particular oil well was the Macondo Prospect. Mancondo is a fictional town described in Gabriel García Márquez's novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. In this book the fictional Mancondo grows from a tiny settlement with almost no contact with the outside world, to eventually become a large and thriving place, before a banana plantation is set up. The establishment of the banana plantation lead to Macondo's downfall, followed by a gigantic windstorm that wipes it from the map. A dominant theme in One Hundred Years of Solitude is the inevitable and inescapable repetition of history in Macondo. The fate of Macondo is both doomed and predetermined from its very existence. Sound Familar?

Other Projects drilled by this particular Deepsea Horizon rig were the Atlantis and Thunderhorse Oil Fields.

And now some reports are coming out that there may be other leaks 6 miles away.

Could something else being going on deep on the ocean floor? Let's not forget that just days before the oil rig explosion occurred in the Gulf, Eyjafjallajökull erupted in Iceland and created an ash cloud that led to the closure of most of Europe's IFR airspace.

Some geologists like Jack M. Reed believes the origin of the earthquakes lies beneath the Gulf of Mexico. This retired Texaco geologist-geophysicist who has been studying the region's geology for over 40 years, says the accepted theory of a quiet geologic evolution of the Gulf of Mexico Basin is fundamentally flawed and needs to be revised. According to him, the Gulf was and is tectonically active -- and it is the likely origin for not only the New Madrid seismic activity, but also for the Middleton Place-Summerville seismic zone near Charleston, S.C. There has been a lot of unusual seismic activity in places like Oklahoma over the past few years, and during the past week lots of little shakes were felt in Arkansas and Tennessee as well. There have also been reports that oilfields in Oklahoma have had an increase in methane release suggesting the oil reserves may run deep along tectonic lines?

Are there are underwater volcanos in the Gulf of Mexico, and could we have drilled into one? Or are volcanos starting to come to life as we approach the 2012 and its predicted earth changes?

And check out this excellent and frightening interview with Jay Weidner on what might be going on deep on the sea floor.

What else could be going on? Interdimensional experiments? Or digging for gold and minerals? See Thomas Gold on the Deep Biosphere and theories on abiotic oil.

PS. Special thanks to Andre Heath of The Alien Project for keeping me and many others up to date on current press releases about the Oil Spill and other big events.

Vernal Equinox -- It's Spring!

Spring begins today officially at 4:32 pm PDT. The term equinox originates from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because at the equinox night and day are equally long. An equinox occurs in the Spring and Fall when the center of the Sun can be observed to be vertically overhead on the Equator.

The Spring equinox marks the beginning of many calendar systems including Western astrology, Iranian calendar, the Bahá'í calendar, and ancient Eqyptian (Coptic) calendar. The Persian/Zoroastrian calendar marks the new year at the Fall Equinox. The Ancient Mayans marked this shift in the architecture of their temples. During the equinox at Chichén Itzá the rays of the setting sun shine across the stepped northwestern corner of the site's principal temple casting a zigzag shadow that resembles a diamondback rattlesnake in profile. The shadow stretches from top to bottom connecting with the carved stone snake's head at the foot of the balustrade. It is the resurrection of a solar deity called Kukulcán/Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent of the ancient Maya.

It is only in India where tradition uses a Sidereal zodiac that the new year begins around April 14 when the Sun actually enters the first sign of Aries in which it is exalted.

Today's equinox chart has the constellation Leo, the Sun's own sign, rising on the horizon in the nakshatra of Magha. Magha is composed of six stars including the bright fixed star Regulus, which is said to be one hundred time more luminous than our own Sun.

Magha translate as 'the mighty one' and its symbol is a palanquin, the royal seat of the king. Magha gives tyage kshepani shakti, the power to leave the body and is described as a very mystical nakshatra. Watch the media for resurrection themes.

In addition the Sun is transiting the early degrees of Pisces in the nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada. This lunar mansion has the power to bring cosmic rain, varshodyamana shakti, which is typical of March weather patterns. It consists of two stars, Pegasi and Andromedae which form the two legs of the back part of a funeral bed. Like the myth of Andromeda, it signifies the release of bondage, the release of kundalini, the release of life through death -- the deep sleep of consciousness.

The deity associated with Uttara Bhadrapada is Ahir Bhudhanya, the serpent of the deep. Watch the media for stories about what is happening deep in the oceans, like the History Channel's How the Earth was Made: the Marianas Trench and the CBC's One Ocean. Click here and here for links.

The 8th house placement of the Sun in the Equinox chart gives mixed results for those celebrating this day as their new year. The Sun represents the father and kingship, so its placement in the 8th house would weaken leaders of those countries who follow this calendar as their new year. The 8th house is a dustana house that weakens most planets as it rules the unknown and chronic aspects of life. It is often described as the house of death, sex, and hidden matters. Certainly recent headlines like Church Sex Scandal Reaching the Pope do not bode well for the leader of the Catholic Church. The attack on the Pope that occurred on New Years Day may be repeated, especially around Easter.

I also view the 8th house as giving opportunities for transition, metamorphosis, and longevity. The 8th house is also a place of secret activities and health issues, so the recent push towards passing the US health care bills is marked with a lot of backroom bargaining.

The nicest astronomical moment of the first day of spring will occur in the Western sky just after sunset when the crescent Moon in its sign of exaltation will transit through the nakshatra Krittika that contains star fields of the Pleiades cluster.

Namaste!

Spring Break

Due to another flare of inflammation throughout my neck and arm, I am taking a little break from online activity and enjoying the early spring in Seattle. I hope to return in a few weeks, perhaps when Mars goes direct on March 10, 2010. Namaste!
